The Spirituality of Cluny

Time:
12:00pm - 5:00pm
Date:
Saturday 24 April 2010
The Abbey of Cluny in France was founded in 910 and became the one of the most renowned centres of holiness in medieval Europe. This symposium will explore various aspects of the ancient Abbey and its spirituality and suggest ways we today might usefully learn from the richness of its mysticism and religious practice.

Dr Robin Gibbons: the Spirituality of Cluny
Dr Peter Tyler: Cluny between East and West
Prof Eric Fernie: Cluniac Architecture
Neil Stratford: the Sculpture of Cluny
Dr Rose Walker: the Wall Paintings of Cluny

There will also be the opportunity to watch extracts from a DVD setting the Abbey in context and showing what remains at Cluny today.

N.B. The day will be followed in the autumn by:
A Study Pilgrimage to Cluny
led by Julienne McLean, Br Patrick Moore, Peter Tyler and Andrew Walker
Tuesday 31st August to Saturday 4th September 2010
